1. Formula Design, Compounding and Processing

  • Seminar: Rubber Formula Design: a two day course
Focus of this seminar is: understanding the effect of ingredients on physical properties in a rubber formula. The loading with filler, the filler - oil pair, solubility of ingredients in rubbers with their solubility limits, The influence of polymer structure on processing and the influence of morphology in polymer blends is discussed for example. The systematic of vulcanization systems like sulphur / accelerators is demonstrated as well as peroxide cure and other systems. The participant should not only gain an prinicple understanding of the relation between rubber and its ingredients in a formula, but should be able to formulate a recipe to specification and design to cost. He should be in the position to tune a rubber compound due to manufacturing conditions.

  • Formula Development with modern Software Tools: a one / two day course
The engineering prinicples of rubber formulation design leads directly to software tools in compounding, which are Statistic Design of Experiments [DoE] and Compound Simulation with Database (GrafCompounder). While DoE software uses techniques to study the relation ship between factors (= ingredients) and responses (= properties), ? GrafCompounder utilises base of happenstance compound data.
In this seminar participant will do a training with both type of software tools. Particularly learn the advantages in compound formulation: Development time, explicit knowledge and at least managable effort. In this workshop,like a seminar, the participant will practice DoE with Design Expert® Compound simulation with GrafCompounder and literature database.

  • Compound to Cost: Introduction and Excercise: a one day course
Material cost are the dominant cost drivers in rubber manufacturing. Material cost cutting efforts can not be successful at the expense of quality nor productivity. A strategy is demonstrated how to handle material under total cost consideration. Participant will learn to simplify a compound formula, identify a redundant material and eliminate ingredients, if there is no justification to be in the compound formula. All is practised and discussed on examples from literature and practise.

  • Injection Molding of Rubber: a one day course
Injection Molding of Rubber is a multi-parameter process. Machine, Mold and Material interact and effect each other. This course will provide an understanding of the relationship between machine, mold and process in injection molding. To govern all the process factors a statistical process model is provided. It allows to work out an operating window with managable experimentation. Mold layout and compound design with special regards to rheology is discussed. ? A technique to access a molding machine is provided to close this seminar. The participant will learn how this triangle can be understood and handled to achieve a stable manufacturing process at highest productivity.

  • Extrusion of Rubber Profiles for Automotive and Constuction: a one day course
Extrusion of Rubber is dependent on compound preparation and consitency to a much larger extend as molding. Extruder and the heating ovens with their slow response to changes limiting the possibilities of the process engineer. Flow behaviour of rubber in the extruder and die, residence time and -distribution with their influence on process performance is dicussed and supported with experiments. Mold and Material interact and effect each other. Measurement of rubber rheology is still under development, which is dicussed in this seminar as well. The participant will learn how the conflicting targets: temperature, output and quality should be handled to achieve the best compromise in operation.

  • Adhesion of Rubber: a one day course
Reinforcing elements are widely used in rubber parts for the automotive and construction industry. There are a few principles, which are supported scientifically and technologically. After an introduction into the principles of adhesion, manufacturing of rubber metal parts are discussed from metal preparation to moulding process. A troubleshooting guideline is provided based on these principles. Rubber to rubber, rubber to TP/TPE, or rubber to fabrics requires different processes but follow the principles as well. All aspects of bonding is governed in this seminar. With the depth understanding of the principles and how to apply the daily operation in rubber reinforcement participants should have an enhanced ability to develop a solution for almost all rubber bonding problems.

  • Coaching
